Wading through treacle – or cycling into the New Year

The New Year’s Day ride is a tradition.

A tradition of mine, and the founding basis of I Do Not Despair, as I first posted on New Year’s Day 2012.

But 2017 didn’t really deliver, it really did feel like I was going through the motions, just to prove I had been out. And this morning’s ride into Brussels for the first day of work lived up to the old English expression “riding through treacle”.

Conditions may just have something to do with it, as greyness continues.

Here’s hoping for the New Year feeling very soon.

  1. I find if I chase targets till the very last day of the year (eg annual mileage) it takes a number of days to re-kindle that same spirit as the new year starts. The mind seems to say: job done….what? we have to start again……?
