2010-2019 – some ride!

Lots of other people are doing it, so I have been tempted by the Christmas holidays to to try and find at least one photo per year from the last decade that made me smile, or brought back a memory.

That includes two years before this blog was started – so a real trip back into the dark ages!

2010 – travelling to mid Wales – just one of my favourite places and a great image on a very frosty morning.

2011 – Florence, Italy. Taken the day that the European Cyclists’ Federation Board offered me a job in Brussels.

2012 – many contenders – the London Olympics, a visit to Ukraine, my first Taipei Cycle Show. But the chance to mountain bike and cycle tour in British Columbia, Canada is almost unbeatable.

Ronde Van Vlaanderen Paterberg

In 2013 we moved to Belgium. Lots of possible pictures about cycling around our new home, but this one picture is the best cycle racing photo I have ever taken, marking the moment when Fabian Cancellara broke away from Peter Sagan on the Paterberg to win the Tour of Flanders. My first day out at the Flemish Classics and proof that I had arrived in the home of classic cycle racing.

2014 has many contenders because Velo-city 2014 was in Australia and we travelled on to my wife’s home country of New Zealand afterwards. The photo above is special because it is taken at dawn, almost at the end of the world. Mountain biking up Bluff Hill on the last morning of our trip gave this panoramic view and stunning skies.

2014 bonus photo – the “Ocean of Bicycles” at Utrecht railway station. (My most popular blog photo to date)

2015 – one day cycling by the Basingstoke Canal in England provided a colour show that I compared to a Monet painting.

2015 bonus – a memory of riding the Taichung Mountain Circuit with a group of local cyclists. What a stunning day out.

2016 – maybe not enough photos of cycling in Belgium, so a treat from a January mountain bike ride.

2017 – so many views and impressions from our summer holiday in France, but nothing beats a day out riding with friends Jens and Doretta on the Haute Corniche above Eze and Monaco.

2018 – another rare privilege provided by Velo-city. To cycle the Olympic cycle road race route from Rio de Janeiro, following stunning coastline and magical views.

2019 – France again – set against the backdrop of Semur en Auxois, our summer escape.

What’s not here? Dozens of images that I wanted to include, but perhaps most noticeably almost no urban riding, although I have so many shots of group rides around the world, perhaps because the urban shots make great blog posts but few single images stand out.

I can partly correct the group photo shortage – here’s a wave that says thanks to my cycling friends and colleagues for the past 10 years – it really has been quite a ride!

  1. The Ocean of Bicycles at Utrecht station is so fine. In UK most station parking is privileged to SUVs and limousines. As a roady Cancellera at full tilt is so special. The frosty morning MTB landscape is wonderful. The sunny climes far from Europe are great for the road less travelled by. A great collection.
